For effective learning, students need to be organized, and for effective teaching, so does their teacher.  That's why I created unit folders for each student, as shown in the photos above.  The folder included vocabulary homework exercises, worksheets on imagery and figurative language, and steps to writing a final essay about the novel.  A grading sheet with a point total of 200 was taped to the inside cover of the packet so that students knew how much each assignment was worth and could keep track of their progress throughout this long-term assignment.  The packet contained the following sections, with exercises for each that corresponded with the reading:

  • An Introduction to Hatchet
  • Imagery
  • Imagery Part Two
  • Figurative Language: Metaphor, Personification, Simile
  • Figurative Language Part Two: Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, Hyperbole, Repetition
  • Figurative Language Review
  • Final Creative Essay: Prewriting worksheet, 1st Draft, Peer Response, Peer Editing, Final Draft.

The final creative essay: Imagine you are Brian.  Describe the plane trip home after being rescued.  Include in your essay four forms of figurative language and three forms of imagery.

A rubric for the essay was also given to the students and it was worth 45 points.  Students had to include elements of figurative language, imagery, themes appropriate to the novel, and correct grammatical form.
